Every chance is first person. The ball comes in off the wing, the world drops into slow motion, and you have a few seconds to decide: place it or blast it, bend it round the wall, take on the last man, or send the keeper the wrong way from twelve yards. One swipe carries your aim, your power and your curl at once, wherever the stroke ends is where the ball goes.

Then it's out of your hands. The keeper reads you. The wall jumps. The net takes the pace out of it, or the woodwork doesn't. You'll know from the crowd before you see the replay.

A career, not a highlight reel. Twenty clubs, nineteen matches, one league. Train through the week, take your chances on Saturday, read the paper on Sunday. Score enough and you lift the title. Don't, and the bottom three end your career and you start again from nothing, so every chance is worth something.

• Power: Longer, faster swipe = more power
• Curve/Bend Shot: Curve your stroke
• Placement: Aim for gaps around the wall and away from the keeper

• Beat a Defender: Tap in the green zone when the meter sweeps
